The design of the extension to the Canberra Centre aims to re-enforce the axis that lies between City Hill and Mount Ainslie that is part of the Walter Burley Griffin Masterplan. This has been achieved by creating an upper arcade running along this axis (Ainslie Avenue) that presents views of Mt Ainslie through a steel framed glass facade. The design of the lower level enhances the link, by featuring a covered pedestrian street that opens out to landscaped forecourts. The clever and extensive use of natural light, along with the refurbishment of the existing centre creates a vibrant and refreshing facelift.
The design endeavours to maximize retailer’s opportunities and enhance the use of civic space at street level. The extension of the Ainslie Avenue Arcade incorporated forty new retail outlets and the 24 hour open streetscape offers a substantial injection of new activity for the City area.
